The Moment of Truth

It's a particularly warm November in Venice Italy. The sun has all but hid itself just below the clouds on the horizon. An aura of creamy orange and soft purple tones scatter across the skies. Street lamps flicker on as they indecisively enter their evening shift. The breeze carries autumn leaves down an alleyway past a small hole-in-the-wall of a restaurant. The waiter closes its doors to prepare for its early Sunday closing. As the welcoming bell calms to a silent state, our focus turns to a sophisticated young couple seated near the window.

The fireplace continues to crackle as the reflections of what are illuminated dances across the room. A sudden sparkle. With a charming smile, the man presents a masterfully crafted ring to his lady. Shimmering and shining in front of her, an immeasurable number of emotions rushes through as she accepts the unexpected proposal. Her tongue slowly slides across her lips, as she bites down in anticipation. Hands in hand, eyes gently closed, their lips join for a moment which they will never forget.

Now, who will be that significant other across the table from you? It can just about be anyone. You can walk down the street, catch the attention of some random girl, court her well, create such a world where similar romantic memories would exist, and live together until death does apart. It's not about the memories you create that determine the quality of the relationship. Instead, it's about how you truly complement one another. Relationships can work between any two individuals. Think about all the different cultures that still believe in planned marriages. Just be grateful that you have a choice; and it's all yours.

Coming out of another long-term relationship, it feels somewhat invigorating. I had felt as if I had reached a plateau. A point where I began to question myself: "so, what's next?" It was like the end of a game in Counter-Strike, with the high score up and me waiting for the next map to load. Server lag? No. The relationship hit a stagnant state, and I was no longer willing to work to keep it going. It got tiring. To be honest, I could have kept it going for however long I pleased. Marriage, kids, house, family car, parent-teacher meetings, the whole deal. It's hard to make such long-term decisions in a short amount of time.

When in love, I think it's important to make sure both of you are growing with the love. It wasn't fair for me to keep the relationship going. It may have taken me way too long to figure this shit out, but I'm glad I had the opportunity to spend my time how I did. While pleasurable, it was also a valuable growing experience. There is no such thing as a "perfect" relationship. And there will always be someone "better." Time constrains us of how long we have before we can find our love; forcing us to decide when the time is right for us to settle down. For now, I know I have some more time. No need for hasty decisions.

Self-promised six months of singledom, here I come! :)

I know what you mean, but the "it" in that sentence might not even be considered a "relationship" by some standards, you know what I mean?

The relationship would've been whatever we made "it" to be. If either of us changed for the better, it may have very well taken in a positive direction. If not, maybe it would have lasted another year or so.

I guess the important thing is that I broke it off before letting time make the decision.

I like to take the selfish approach. When in love, make sure you're growing with the love. Worrying about holding the other back will focus on the negative and make it stronger.
